Introduction

What is Sinusitis?

Hello, dear all! Today's article, Auntie want to talk about "What is Sinusitis?". Auntie will just keep simple and short for this article. Hehe. LET'S START!

Let's start with "What is Sinus?" Sinuses, or usually called paranasal sinuses, are connecting hollow spaces surrounding our nose, and their job is to produce a thin layer of mucus to moisturize the nasal airway. There are 4 sinuses in our skull:
  • Frontal: Located at the low-center of your forehead
  • Sphenoid: Located in the bones behind your nose
  • Ethmoid: Located between your eyes
  • Maxillary (the largest): Located at your cheekbones.

So basically, sinusitis is like a symptom to allergy rhinitis, common cold, nasal polyps (small growths in the lining of the nose) and deviated septum (a shift in nasal cavity). It occurs when there is an inflammation of the inner wall of your nose and tissue lining of your sinuses. As we know, sinuses produce mucus, even though in small amount. However, when there is inflammation, the sinuses start to be filled with more mucus/fluid. Thus, blocking the airway. That's why you feels like hard to breath. And since the mucus built up in the sinuses, the chance of germ/ bacteria growth is high, which not a good news at all! So, it is better to treat your sinusitis early, before you getting sinus infection.
